  • Dr. Tilley joined the Center of the Study of Early Christianity with an appointment in the Department of Semitic and Egyptian Languages in Fall 2023. His research and teaching focus on late ancient intellectual history and languages, especially relating to Syriac Christianity. His interests include asceticism, late ancient Christian thought and spirituality, ancient philosophy, and the intersection of religion and medicine. He works with texts in diverse languages from across the Roman and Sasanian worlds, including Syriac, Latin, Greek, Coptic, Arabic, and Armenian. During the 2021-2022 academic year, he was Junior Fellow in Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection. Dr. Tilley currently serves on the Gorgias Press Syriac-English Antioch Bible (Old Testament) Annotation Committee and as an Assistant Editor for Ancient Jew Review, a non-profit web journal devoted to the interdisciplinary study of ancient Judaism.
